I've read it a couple times! Such a good book.

A converse of the example you mentioned (which I believe occured in Fadiman's book) is when immigrants are shocked that you *can't* bring food into a US hospital (or at least it's discouraged). Farmer, in Haiti, mandated that everyone waiting in line for the clinic be given three meals a day.

Congrats! I love the idea that medical anthropology takes some of the ideas I read about recently in The Spirit Level, about how greater rich-poor disparities lead to greater health problems, and actually looks at why that is and digs into the nuances of what it means. Best of luck with your defense! You will do great!

Best of luck in your defense!

Medical anthropology is really interesting to me. My introduction to it was maybe The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman. Have you read it?

I’ve noticed huge cultural differences even in first world contexts. For example, when I had my appendix out in Taiwan I was shocked to find that the hospital does not generally provide inpatients with food (because relatives are supposed to bring it). Fascinating stuff, and so cool that you study it.

(sorry for double post; I commented with the wrong account, but I wanted you to know 'who' it was!)
